ENTREPRENEURS TRAITS : OPEN RISK TAKER

OPEN RISK TAKER

In my opinion, open risk taker is an entrepreneurial traits that highly needed and applied to operate a business. It is because without these traits a person as risk taking is a characteristic of traditional version of an entrepreneur and the corporate entrepreneur. For example, Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook. The risk taken by Mark Zuckerberg is to maintain the privacy of user’s personal information from getting leaked.
Mark Zuckerberg is co-founder and CEO of the social-networking website Facebook, as well as one of the world's youngest billionaires. Zuckerberg and his friends created a site that allowed users to create their own profiles, upload photos, and communicate with other users. The group ran the site—first called The Facebook—out of a dorm room at Harvard until June 2004. After his sophomore year, Zuckerberg dropped out of college to devote himself to Facebook full time, moving the company to Palo Alto, California. By the end of 2004, Facebook had 1 million users.

ENTREPRENEURS TRAITS : NETWORKED

NETWORKED

Network marketing is a type of business opportunity that is very popular with people looking for part-time, flexible businesses. Having enough human resources is a key factor for entrepreneurial achievements. Combined with leadership, the entrepreneurial network is an important kind of social network not only necessary to properly run the business or project, but also to differentiate the business from similar projects.

Some of the best-known companies in America is Mary Kay Cosmetics and Tupperware. Mary Kay sells cosmetic through a multi-level marketing model. Mary Kay distributors (called "beauty consultants") can make income by directly selling to people in their community, she receive a share of sales made by people they recruit into the distribution network. Mary Kay distributors must purchase a $100 starter kit in order to qualify.

As a private company, Mary Kay releases few details about the average income of its sellers. In 2005, Mary Kay reported that its wholesale worldwide sales exceeded US$2.2 billion. In 2010, worldwide wholesale figures was reported at US$2.5 billion. Neither of those both figure take into account product returns.

ENTREPRENEURS TRAITS : VISIONARY

VISIONARY

Obstacles are seen as innovative and creative challenges, not barriers. All the reasons something can’t be done are replaced by better ways to get it done, quicker and at less cost. Nothing is immutable, even the culture of the organization or the business. Vision is pretty simple. It is a picture of your ideal life.  And anyone should be able to describe that picture.

Tony Fernandes can be a good example for his visionary skill. He have a creative mind which he has overcome people problem to fly with airplane. He who grab the chance has sell a low price ticket which have attract people more to his airplane business. “Now everyone can fly” have been a slogan which resemble his AirAsia. Everyone can see the problem but nobody except Sir Tony Fernandes can solve the problem.

ENTREPRENEUR TRAITS : FAILURE IS AN OPTION

FAILURE IS AN OPTION

Most entrepreneurs deal with failure in one of two extreme ways. The first, made popular by many tech companies, is “fail fast, fail often.” At the other extreme is the notion that “failure is not an option.” Instead of trying to avoid making mistakes and failing, they actively seek opportunities where they can face the limits of their skills and knowledge so that they can learn quickly. They understand that feeling afraid or unprepared is a sign of being in the space for optimal growth and is all the more reason to move ahead. When unsuccessful people feel unprepared or afraid, they thought that it is time to stop, readdress their plans, question their motives, or spend more time preparing and planning. Failing quickly in order to learn fast—or what Silicon Valley entrepreneurs commonly call failing forward—is at the heart of many innovative businesses.

Steve Jobs is a good example for an entrepreneur that have gone through major failure. he is known because of his highly innovations, but also because his tragic comeback from an almost irrecoverable failure. Jobs found success in his 20s when Apple became the best product which have been a well-known among people, unfortunately when he was 30, Apple's board of directors decided to fire him.

Without fearing by the failure, Jobs founded a new company, NeXT, which was eventually acquired by Apple. Once back to Apple, Jobs proved his skill for greatness by reinventing the company's image and taking the Apple brand to new height.

ENTREPRENEURS TRAITS : OPEN CULTURE

OPEN CULTURE

Open culture where knowledge is a concept that should be extended freely and growth must come from the developing world, change or enrich the work of the existing on the basis of partnership and cooperation, without being bound to the rules relating to the protection of intellectual property laws. In the context of globalization, the result is that all citizens should have equal access to information.

Among the entrepreneurs who practice these qualities is of Datuk Jimmy Choo. Datuk Jimmy Choo is the top managers in the company. He was responsible for making decisions about the direction of his company, Jimmy Choo Ltd.

As designer shoes and handbags, he also has to choose the most effective communication channels to market new designs.

Therefore, Datuk Jimmy Choo act as informants to monitor its internal affairs. He also became the disseminator and spokesman for all its products. He will issue a memo about the latest release of the store, make promotions, offer discounts, special servicing and so on to attract Customers. This is one of the evidence on which we can see how the cultural traits of successful entrepreneurs adopt open in sharing information about his product without expects its employees. As a spokesman Furthermore, Datuk Jimmy Choo will issue its own statement in the media whether the mass media, print media, electronic media nor the output of goods.

If there is any dispute regarding its products as well, which takes care of his own and held a media conference to resolve the conflict. For example, Datuk Jimmy Choo OBE awarded the "Order of the British Empire" from the Queen of England, Queen Elizabeth II. In an interview, Datuk Jimmy tells him to read a message from Queen Elizabeth to receive the award while shaking his hand jitter. However, the result of his determination that had been set up to make his company the confidence to accept the award.

ENTREPRENEURS TRAITS : OUTCOME ORIENTED

OUTCOME ORIENTED

No matter what the obstacle they keep going and in most cases it is because they have extraordinary clarity on the outcome. They took the time to clearly define what it is that they wanted to do. They stopped and thought about their life, and what it was that they wanted to accomplish and this gave them the drive to see the task all the way to its outcome.

The Ramly Burger, also known as the Burger Ramly, is a Malaysian street burger founded by Dato' Haji Ramly Bin Mokni through Pemasaran Ramly Mokni Sdn Bhd in Malaysia. Though the term "Ramly Burger" may refer to any of the burgers sold in a Ramly Burger stall, it most commonly refers to the Ramly Burger Special. At first, he was about to make a loan with a bank and unfortunately his loan was rejected because the banker said the business is not a profitable job. Although people says, that selling burgers in Malaysia is a ridiculous job but for Dato Ramly, he saw an opportunity in this job and have achieved what he wants. In this situation, we can learn that eventhough Dato Ramly have difficulty in making a loan to do this business he still not give up on his burger selling business.

ENTREPRENEURS TRAITS : TEAM ORIENTED

TEAM ORIENTED

Most successful entrepreneurs recognize that they can't run their business alone. Delegating responsibilities to teams of employees or even outside consultants will not only allow the company to focus on its main skill but also will improve the efficiency of its operations.By starting a firm in a team, more issues will be reviewed. Each person has his or her own skill and therefore they are able to point out each other’s outcome. The entrepreneur could overlook information which could be crucial for success. In other words, the entrepreneur loses himself in his “own world” and possible overconfident. By starting in a team, many more issues can be reviewed, allowing the other team members to point out important issues which are overlooked by the initiator of the idea. Because a team combines more competences, it should lead to a more successful entrepreneurial firm.

As entrepreneurial teams combine skills and experience of the individual members, they are less depending upon others unlike solo entrepreneurs that may require skills from others that they lack themselves

Entrepreneurs build teams to help them expand their business. They realize that it's not easy to build a firm alone and that they have to surround themselves with talented, like-minded people to closer the gaps. And they also realize that you can get your best ideas from team members.

Peggy Swartchild and Carol Levy, are highly successful entrepreneurs, both independently and together. Jointly, Carol Levy are also behind the Larry and Carol Levy Institute for Entrepreneurial Practice at the Kellogg School of Management as well as Kellogg’s Social Entrepreneurship Lab.

Carol studied at Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts until she moved to and ultimately graduated from Northwestern University. After a successful career in commercial real estate, Carol decided to put her business instincts for creative use sharpened by her experience. In 1983, she became Co-Owner of Material Possessions with Peggy Swartchild. With her creative combination of entrepreneurial spirit and imaginative thinking, Carol had made the store to expand to a downtown Chicago location.

In 1983, Peggy partnered with Carol Levy, to open a second location in Chicago within the high-end department store, Stanley Korshak. Thirty seven years later after they had made a move to their second department store, Peggy and Carol have their dream store steps away from Chicago's Magnificent Mile in the heart of Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood. Peggy's creativity have resulted in stores full with high quality stuff, timeless pieces that not only look gorgeous, but also serve a function

ENTREPRENEURS TRAITS : OBSERVANT

OBSERVANT

Observant Jack-Of-All-Trades = Master Entrepreneur. There goes a saying: “To be a good speaker, you have to be a good listener.” Tweaking it a little, for those startup entrepreneurs who are still working for some boss, we say that working sincerely under somebody’s leadership will make you a better leader.

Consider this – the more you’ve listened to, the more you’ve read, the better you can speak. Similarly, the more jobs you’ve handled with varied job descriptions, the more diversified your skill set will be.

Mr. Durrani was, in many ways, an unlikely recipient for such a revelation. An observant Muslim born to Pakistani parents, a Wall Street refugee turned natural-foods entrepreneur, he was then trying to create a line of frozen-food entrees adhering to the Muslim religious standard of halal for the American market. He,whom a Muslim himself has seen the problem in various perspective and he took the chance by selling halal food first in west country. He was then widen his business by selling frozen food so that his product can be sell around the world.

In 2010,Saffron Road has made the first entrees landed store shelves. As the Muslim holy month of Ramadan approaches, bringing with it sahur and nightly iftar meals, the company has put out more than 50 different products and built annual sales on a pace to reach $35 million.

As significant, thanks to a the partnership with the Whole Foods chain, Saffron Road’s products have moved beyond expected and made it into the commercial mainstream. Due to that, Saffron Road is among the first halal producers to follow what might be called the kosher model of simultaneously serving and transcending a communal consistency.

WHAT IS ENTREPRENEUR?

"Entrepreneurs use innovation to exploit or create change and opportunity for the purpose of making profit. They do this by shifting resources from an area of lower productivity into an area of higher productivity and greater yield, accepting a high degree of risk and uncertainty in doing so" (reference Patricia's lecture notes)

An entrepreneur is a leader, a manager, a risk taker. However it is plausible to say that not all managers are entrepreneurs. Robinson, (1999) proposed key differences between a leader and a manager to back up the assertions that not all managers are leaders.

All human beings are born with gifts and talents that are unique to them. All of us have something that we can share with the world that would give us all of the success we desire. What minimizes our greatness is not having the appropriate Mindset to accomplish what we want to do.It is the Mindset that determines your thinking and your thinking determines the actions that you take. The actions you take unlock your true greatness.

Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Tony Fernandes - A Succesful Entrepreneur

When we heard about Air Asia, then you must know or have heard about Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Tony Fernandes. Anthony Francis Fernandes or familiarly called Toni Fernandes was the one who was instrumental in making a near-bankrupt airline into a highly profitable airline. He is the founder and leader of Air Asia Berhad. He was born on 30 April 1964 in Kuala Lumpur. His father’s named Stephen Edward Fernandes and his mother named Ena Dorothy Fernandez. At a young age, he always followed his mother a businessman to Tupperware dealer parties. He was educated at Epsom College 1977 until 1983 and later graduated from the London School of Economics in 1987.Everyone will want to achieve great results in their lives but not everyone managed to make it happen. Many people assume that he did not achieve what a dream because it has no capital, no network, had no knowledge of it or various other reasons that ultimately make them stop trying. But his determination has been proved that he can do it and make Air Asia one of the most success low cost airlines in the world. In the past many people assume it is impossible to get on a plane because it is expensive, but after Air Asia with the motto "Everyone can fly", almost everyone today can board a plane at an affordable price.

One of the entrepreneurial traits that have shown by Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Tony Fernandes is proactive. To be a successful entrepreneur, they must have a proactive method so that they can compete with others entrepreneur who already establish and success. Proactive method can describe as people who get things done. If you are proactive, you make things happen, instead of waiting for them to happen to you. Same goes to Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Tony Fernandes’s story. His proactive action can be seen when Air Asia achieved success under the leadership of Tony Fernandes that able to adopt effective cost management system in their airline business. In any matters, the low cost is always highly preferred and the favorable one by the customers and this is where he starts to begins. Air Asia initially began its operations with a lower cost when compared to the nearest competitor Malaysia Airlines. The strategy of lowering the initial cost of business is to buy an airplane used. It is definitely cost less than a new aircraft. This is the initial strategy. Once the company has been profitable and have more funds, the aircraft that purchased at this early stage will be replaced with new airplanes gradually. In addition to the initial cost, operating costs and daily costs such as staff salaries, fees for airplane landing and so also identified as cost components to be managed at a lower level as well.

How Air Asia managed to reduce the cost of payroll employees, including pilots? The cost of the pilot will normally represent one of the highest cost components that must be spent by the airline. However, the management of Air Asia managed to do it in the other ways. Air Asia management team are very wise to take chances and begins to act when the other companies are having difficult trading period with their business. For example, due to the events of 11 September 2001, a lot of airlines pilots are fired and after the incident, many airlines could not bear the operational costs because many people do not dare to travel by plane except for a handful of forced or emergency. Many other airlines have had to lay off flight path does not benefit them. As a result, many pilots lost their source of income due to disposal or less to fly. Air Asia to take this opportunity and offer employment opportunities to the pilots who were fired to join them. However, Air Asia has more power at that time because the scheme or the employment package offered is significantly lower than the airline competitors. Pilots desperate for work will receive an offer Air Asia even though it is not very attractive remuneration package.

All we can says is Tony Fernandes is a smart person and wise to take advantage from the current situation. He able to think forward and grab the opportunities before anybody could think about it. His proactive method have already place him on list one of the successful entrepreneur in Malaysia especially in the Airline industry.

Next entrepreneurial traits are team oriented. If we do some research on why Air Asia can be one of the successful airlines in Malaysia, one of the answer will be teamwork. Tony Fernandes really appreciate and consent about their employees because he always put their employees as his top priority and after that, the customers. He also argues that if workers can work in a happy situation, its impact, they will welcome and serve our customers better. He has been actively looking for new staff that has high ideals and humble. "You can have all the money you want in the world, and you can have all the brilliant ideas but if you do not have the people, forget it," said the CEO of Air Asia, Tan Sri Dato’ Dr. Tony Fernandes.

In addition, Tony is also a passionate entrepreneur. He can communicate with others with a cheerful heart and open. Thus, he is able to build a wide social network, and this is an important factor for him to become one of Malaysia's most successful entrepreneurs. He not only has a good relationship with the local people but he is also on good terms with foreign entrepreneurs and high profile ministers. He is also friends with the locals, regardless of race, religion, color, position, and wealth because he believed that all his friends help him to expand the scale of its business. For example, his staff has a strong commitment in their daily work and very loyal to Tony. Tony also interacts with the staff in order to understand their needs and build positive relationships with them.

Then, in order to be a successful entrepreneur, they must have a strong networked to expand their empire. Tony Fernandes also use this traits and it becomes one of the income sources for his business. Tony Fernandes uses his experience to create strategic marketing and strong cooperation with the Virgin, Sir Richard Branson and Air Asia X were initiated. The continuation of this collaboration can be seen with the success of Air Asia offers flights to European countries such as the United Kingdom, France and others. Started as a local hero and fly customers around domestic destinations, Air Asia once again took the opportunity to move forward on flights to destinations outside the country. Although it takes a bit longer but every effort is finally paid off.

One of the networking strategies that Tony Fernandes use is his intention to buy a football team in the United Kingdom. Even it is a tough step to be made but he never gives up and keeps trying. Finally in 2011, after the negotiations, Air Asia managed to buy a football team. Why is this step necessary? It is one of the strategies towards branding and how to airline's move to penetrate the market in Europe. When Air Asia brand has been synonymous with the fans of the football team, thus the people in the United Kingdom will recognize Air Asia as a brand that should be selected. This is a golden opportunity that Air Asia looks for.

He always belief that "The more you give, the more you will get". He also provides a lot of financial assistance to reduce the burden of the poor and so on. Air Asia is quite active in helping airlines to bring home Malaysians in countries such as Indonesia disaster or crisis such as the civil war in the Gulf countries and so on. They believe the return to be derived from their concerns will come at any time and in various forms.

Tan Sri Anthony Francis Fernandes, whom was born on 30 April 1964 and live in Kuala Lumpur with his father named Stephen Edward Fernandes and his mother named Ena Dorothy Fernandez. He was educated at Epsom College in 1977 to 1983 and then graduated from the London School of Economics in 1987. He has a vision that wants to open an airline with a low ticket price. Tony Fernandes founded Tune Air Sdn Bhd in 2001, with the vision to make air travel more affordable to Malaysians. The biggest achievement Fernandes' Air Asia has made in international transport. Before he arrived at the scene, the countries in the region have never had any kind of open-skies agreements. With a dream to expand his branch, he opened several airplane field throughout Asia including Singapore, Bangkok, and Macau. He also provides cargo services, sales of drinks on board, and marketing joint ventures with other companies.

Airlines Air Asia is quickly becoming profitable within two years because of low fare, high quality service. Air Asia has now been voted the world's best low cost airline and unprecedented, in six consecutive years (2009-2014). In short, Tan Sri Dr Antony Francis Fernandes is an entrepreneur with vision, foresight and vision Air Asia has changed to become a pioneering low-cost airline in Asia and the largest low cost airline in the world.

Tan Sri Anthony Fernandes or better known as Tony Fernandes born 30 April 1964 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Tony Fernandes is Tune Air Sdn Bhd company founder which launch low cost flight service to Malaysian population. Tony Fernandes pursues the dream to build a low standard flight industry namely by take over airline saddled with big debt and experience record that is very bad. Apart from that, Dr Mahathir advises Tony Fernandes to buy flight ship company that already have from build itself because cost that is quite expensive and late new company to develop. Tony Fernandes feels that Air Asia flight ship company he bought is accurate. After that, Tony Fernandes believes that Malaysian passenger will celebrate low flying standard so that could shorten time and standard especially in economic situation that is tight. Therefore, Tony Fernandes parrots Ryanair system (Ryanair that also copied the system from Airlines Southwest in United States ) , a Irlandia flight ship that most successful in the world.

ENTREPRENEURS TRAITS : PROACTIVE

1.    PROACTIVE

Bateman and Grant (1993) discussed the proactive component of organizational behavior and introduced a measure of the "proactive personality." This measure of a personal disposition toward proactive behavior is intended to identify differences among people in the extent to which they take action to influence their environments. Bateman and Grant defined the prototypic “proactive personality" as one who is relatively unconstrained by situational forces and who effects environmental change. Proactive personalities identify opportunities and act on them; they show initiative, take action, and persevere until they bring about meaningful change.

For example :
John Schnatter is the founder of Papa John’s Pizza

The Papa John's pizza business was founded in 1983. He then sold his 1971 Z28 Camaro to purchase $1,600 used pizza equipment and began selling pizzas to the tavern's customers out of the converted closet. His pizzas has been so popular that one year later he was able to move into a wider space. In 2009, Schnatter got the Camaro back by contacting the family that he sold the car to in 1983.

Today, the company is the third largest take-out and pizza delivery restaurant in the world with headquarters in Jeffersontown, Kentucky, near Louisville.

Named 1998 National Ernst & Young Retail/Consumer Entrepreneur of The Year.
